LORRAINE WAS a tall, thin woman with dyed black hair cut into a severe bob. Her hands fluttered in time with the wattled skin on her neck, and her soft voice held what Jonathan could only assume was habitual apology. She didn’t stay long after hurrying into Neridah’s apartment and giving Col his medication.

“He’ll get drowsy now, so I should get him down to the car before he falls asleep on me.”

“How are you going to get him out of the car afterwards?” asked Jonathan.

“Oh, I’ll—”

“I’ll follow you home and give you a hand. It’ll be better for Col if he wakes up in his own bed and not the car.” Ben stepped forward and placed his hand on Lorraine’s shoulder.

When they had retrieved a stumbling Col and driven away, Jonathan trudged back upstairs to his apartment. “It’s nothing but foolish imaginings.” He scowled. “I’m not a basket case and don’t need anyone holding my hand to go up the stairs.” He opened his door, slipped inside, and closed it. He leaned his forehead on the door as he clicked the locks into place.

He’d been there all of three days and had barely had a moment to himself. Why, then, did he feel so lonely?
